At REM d.o.o., we have successfully completed the RETURN research and development project, aimed at developing a low-carbon modular unit equipped with an advanced tracking, condition monitoring, and lifecycle management system.
The project addresses the growing demand for sustainable construction solutions that not only provide a high-quality living or working environment but also reduce environmental impact and enable more efficient use of resources. As part of the development process, special attention was devoted to structural optimization, material selection, and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), allowing us to evaluate environmental impacts and identify opportunities for further reduction.
A key component of the project is the development of a smart monitoring system for modular units. Integrated sensors enable real-time tracking of the module’s location, detection of movement during transportation, and monitoring of critical environmental parameters such as temperature and humidity. The collected data is transmitted wirelessly to an information management system, providing improved oversight of the use, maintenance, and logistics of modular units.
The developed solution offers users greater transparency regarding the condition of modular buildings, faster response to potential damage, and more efficient planning of maintenance and transportation activities. As a result, the service life of the units is extended, while overall management and operating costs are reduced.
The RETURN project represents an important step forward in the digitalization and sustainable development of modular construction and further demonstrates REM’s commitment to developing advanced, environmentally responsible, and technology-driven solutions that meet the needs of the modern market.
The RETURN project was co-financed under the public call “Incentives for Research and Development Projects under the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP)” and is the result of successful collaboration between REM d.o.o. and L-Tek d.o.o..
